The limits to pragmatism
Not everything needs a sub-head
Somewhat alarming thought:
chatting with wise friends about Truss’s likely trajectory, I’ve been incrementally reassured by their unanimity on the grubby political imperative of a pragmatic response to the crises all around. However, looking at her cabinet appointments, it strikes me that this is a self-reinforcing group. It’s going to be quite hard for any one of them to propose moderation in the face of the others. Once you’ve given JRM the climate brief, you’ve essentially announced that you’re going to park your tanks on the lawn.
