Demotivation

This is a thing I did a while back for a thing on AI. I’ve been to a few recently and a lot of people in the policy arena and so on seem to be conflating Machine Learning with AI and getting into a whole thing. I’ve been asked out in the world about AI rights and sure, if an AI were conscious it would have rights which we should acknowledge. I don’t find that question entirely challenging. Recognising consciousness, of course, is.

In other news I am working on books, tinkering with TV, thinking about trying to pull together digital novel editing norms because the way we do it right now makes no sense to me, and basically staring at my incoming news feed in abject horror as the world continues to spiral downwards into screw up and our politicians sit on their arses/thumbs/own balls/responsibilities.

I’m doing less social media and more IRL. Sorry ’bout that. (But not very.)

I know this website is due for an overhaul. Maybe next year.

The Gnomon Audiobook

20 March 2018

bit of a nutso image of me with mushrooms and gangstersYes, that is my author photo substantially messed around with using public domain images and a bit of software I have because I don’t have photoshop skills and like making weird images, however amateurish. No, it has nothing to do with the audiobook really. Sorry. I just like posts to have accompanying visuals.

The audiobook: right. It’s happening, but I don’t know the time frame. There’s a discussion going on about exactly how to approach it, because the book is HUGE and there are games I played with text which one cannot easily replicate with voice(s). As soon as I know the schedule and the reality I will say so very loudly, and yes, I do hear everyone saying WE WANT THE DAMN AUDIOBOOK NICK and I get it. This is one of those situations where I am not in direct control of the production process and that process is subject to the constraints and indignities (but also benefits from the power and financial heft) of the corporate process.

More soon.

Whelm

Whelm – to turn over or capsize

Which I love. Obviously, this is where we get “overwhelm“, which for me has a connotation of inundation.

All good, but here’s the thing that’s making me happy today: “underwhelm“. It’s a somewhat ironic coinage, and it turns out to be older than you might expect (1934). Pondering “whelm” on the bus this morning, though, it struck me that “underwhelm” has a ghost meaning to go with the literal meaning of “overwhelm”.

If:

Overwhelm – to cover completely, overpower; to capsize by force of flow.

then:

Underwhelm – to capsize by withdrawal; to suffer (or inflict) a reversal by removing what is beneath.

Fun :)

Snow and Guns

page one

I told a story on Twitter this morning – a true story that happened to me today. It’s getting some attention, so I’ve pasted it below. The image above is one of the first I found when I went looking for a PD picture of a gun to use for this post, but I’ve grabbed the screen because I wanted you to see what the surrounding images were.

Sometimes I think our AI is much better than we deserve.
